Senior Vaccines: Flu, Pneumonia and Shingles
Senior vaccines are a marvel of the 20th century health care and have been improving into the 21st century. Older Adults are often at risk for some common illnesses due to a lowered immune system which accompanies aging. The truism, “An ounce of Prevention is worth a pound of cure” is a way you can avoid a lot of pain, expense and risk by checking with your physician about these three types of vaccines.
The Flu shot should be taken by anyone who is over 65, or in a high risk category, barring any medical reason not to. The same goes for Shingles and Pneumonia. Take advantage of these medicinal miracles and lower your risk of getting and suffering through these conditions. They are covered by Medicare and most insurance.
Since all three can be debilitating, let alone painful, they are also a reason some folks hire an in-home caregiver to help with personal care as well as doing the shopping, cooking, driving and laundry.
Retirees and other elders are urged to speak with their doctor’s about common vaccines. Why suffer or be at risk for a worsening condition? Flu season is around the corner, so speak with your doctor and make an appointment to get yourself protected.
Many doctors offer these vaccines in their office and if they have not initiated the conversation, then it is up to you to do so. It is important to also keep currnet on the improvements of the vaccines for seniors. Pneumonia and Shingles seem to have newer versions for the elderly. In South Florida, we get an annual influx of northerners and Canadians. They bring with them the germs form their areas so that is another reason to consider vaccines for the flu just to protect yourself during flu season.
